What happens when nothing works anymore?

⚡ I’m off then! No, we’re not going on a pilgrimage. We’re talking about electricity. The heat and drought of the past few weeks have once again reminded us how important a reliable energy supply is. Low water levels have significantly reduced hydroelectric power generation in Austria.

🔌 This raises a crucial question for data centers: What happens if the normal power supply actually fails? After all, a blackout should not automatically mean a complete shutdown. UPS systems must take over immediately, the emergency power supply must start up reliably, and cooling, security systems, and other critical components must continue to function.

That is precisely why reliability begins long before a power outage – namely, during the planning phase. Redundancies, power supply, cooling, safety concepts, emergency procedures, and restart procedures must be viewed as an integrated system and coordinated with one another.

Our colleague Georg Meixner has been studying the topic of blackouts and their impact on data centers for years. And one thing is clear: True resilience isn’t evident during normal operations, but rather when things don’t go according to plan.
